There are lot of way to vizualise data depending what you really want to know. In my example, you can find the absolute Tons volumefor each year, It's the basic information and really easy to represent with the Bar chart.

But now put yourself in the shoes of your business user. What are you naturally doing by watching the first chart ?

Yes, you are looking for trends, variations, comparisons. Is it growing and how much ? More or less to 0 ? ...
